I’ve learned a lot about people over time through their magazine collection. Over the years I have limited mine to the ones I get for being part of a club and ones that inspire and educate. What does your collection say about you and what need do they fulfil?
I must preface this blog by confessing that one of the first things I ask clients to do, when setting a personal budgets, is to ditch the non-essential items they are in the habit of buying. A lot of the time magazines fall into this category.
As you know I am a big fan of the library and love to visit when the magazines are fresh on the shelf. I am also guilty of flicking through the mag racks of friends whose magazine reading habits fall into their non-negotiable budget pile.
As a treat it’s nice to have a magazine to inspire you. With ‘trash’ mags I find you can pick up an issue from January 2013 and the January 2014 will essentially have the same content – or the same formula with slightly different content (depending on who’s hot and who’s not!) so you’re not missing much.
Reading magazines, like watching TV and interacting on social media, is a personal choice and can create the time out you need – but I encourage you to think about what else you could be doing that might be more enriching and fun (and doesn’t cost as much).
